When we were making the Infantry Interactive TV DAL one of the infantry men said unprompted, “if you want to know anything about the Army, just ask a soldier”. This is the principle behind Tough Questions, Striaght Answers: a need to get potential recruits to make contact with real soldiers and the real Army and by so doing, overcome the wall of fear. It aims to provide the reassurance and confidence building function that an army career advisor has formerly done at a later stage of the recruitment process.

People would be challenged to ask a tough question about the army and have it answered by a real soldier. Advertising executions would be tightly targeted by media. An execution on Handbag.com addressing the concerns and interests of potential female recruits would drive traffic to the site where they would be answered regularly by a female officer (see Female Officer MPU). Questions that concern ethnic minorities would appear on appropriate community sites and be answered by a soldier from an ethnic minority background (see Ethnic Soldier MPU). People posing questions would receive an e-mail back with their answer.

The question and answer would then be added to the pool of Tough Questions that can be browsed on ArmyJobs. On the site the questions can be searched by tags and by person answering. The goal is to connect the answers and opinions with real people rather than a list of FAQs.
